By now, the newness of summer has worn off, boredom may be creeping in and school’s about to start. Here’s an idea to give the whole family a second wind: Finish off your summer with a full schedule of FUN!

We’ve picked five local destinations sure to bring you as much joy as you can pack in a single summer.

Dallas Zoo

When to go: This weekend!

Cost: $15 for adults 12 and up; $12 for kids. Print this card and go before July 31 for a buy one adult ticket/get one child ticket free discount.  (Parking $8)

Why we picked this one: Over 100 acres of habitat for all kinds of creatures, from turtles to tigers! Best of all, the zoo is committed to the conservation and management of all animals, whether they’re in zoos or in the wild.

What you’ll do there: This is an interactive experience. When you’re not staring wide-eyed at amazing animals like kangaroos and anteaters, you can feed exotic birds and goats and go on a pony ride!

Hawaiian Falls

When to go: Any Friday night in August 1-22

Cost: $5 for Friday Night Slides

Why we picked this one: Every kid loves a waterpark, but oftentimes they’re on the pricy side. Hawaiian Falls, with several locations around the metroplex, offers a HUGE discount on Friday nights in August.

What you’ll do there: Slide, float and tube your way around this water-filled paradise. Feel the rhythm of the ocean in the wave pool. Bask in the sun on the lazy river. Race other kids down a slippery, steep water slide into a refreshing pool of water. Your aquatic adventure awaits!

Dallas Arboretum

When to go: Anytime in August

Cost: The entire month of August, admission to the General Garden and Children’s Adventure Garden is only $1. (Parking $5-10)

Why we picked this one: Aside from the family-friendly cost, the Dallas Arboretum is a physical and mental playscape for both kids and adults. You’ll experience sights and sensations you never imagined while learning incredible facts about the world around you!

What you’ll do there: You’ll get to explore 17 indoor and outdoor stations in a labyrinth of natural beauty. These science-themed stations include a larger-than-life kaleidoscope, a tree canopy, a waterfall and much, much more!

The Reunion Tower

When to go: Anytime this summer or by July 31 for a discount

Cost: Free for kids 3 and under; $8 for kids ages 4-12; $16 for adults

Why we picked this one: You’ve seen it high in the sky, the spinning globe perched high above the tower. But if you haven’t seen it from the inside, you’re missing a breathtaking view of Dallas!

What you’ll do there: Take an elevator straight to the top. Once you get there, you can look out over the Ge O-Deck observation deck. Indoors you’ll find an interactive tour fun for kids of all ages.

Galaxy Drive-In

When to go: Anytime after 6 p.m.

Cost: $7 for adults 12 and up; $3 for kids under 12 (price is for two features)

Why we picked this one: The drive-in movie experience is rare and quite a treat! The whole family can watch a movie from the comfort of the car, picnic blanket, pickup bed… you get the idea. Plus, there’s a miniature golf course!

What you’ll do there:  Load up your family (including your dog!) and head to the theater early for good parking. Head to the snack bar for a full meal or a few snacks. Arrange your movie-watching setup. And ring an extra $3 or $4 if you want to play mini-golf.
