SEVEN KID-FRIENDLY WAYS TO SPEND LABOR DAY WEEKEND

Labor Day is a holiday that recognizes hard work. It’s also an occasion providing one last break before the school year hits high gear. Some people go away the weekend, but there are actually plenty of activities to keep you occupied right here in D-FW. Read on for some ideas of what you and your family can do to celebrate this Labor Day!

  1. Bedford Blues & BBQ: This three-day cook-off battle incorporates the ABCs of Labor Day: art, blues and cooking, Texas style. Enjoy some of the best barbecue in the nation, hear talented musicians playing the blues and feast your eyes on an array of local art. Tickets are $7.

  2. Nasher Sculpture Center: Head downtown on Saturday for this kid-friendly event, where your little ones can express their creativity. September’s theme explores heritage, and kids will make family frames.

  3. Fiestas Patrias: It’s a double celebration! Celebrate Labor Day AND Mexican Independence Day on Sunday at this free festival, packed with Latino music, traditional dance and a special declaration of independence.

  4. Westfest Czech and Polka Fest: A smorgasbord of activity, this festival promises to entertain, with baking contests, an eating contest, country music, polka dancing, a carnival, parade, tractor pull, 3-mile run, horseshoe and washer pitching, helicopter rides and more. Tickets are cheap (and even free for certain ages), and parking is $5.

  5. Garland Labor Day Event: Kick off Labor Day in Garland with a traditional parade starting at 9AM. Stick around for live entertainment, a bounce house, food and fun in the sun!

  6. Water Gun Fight at Klyde Warren Park: Load your water guns and come prepared to soak your opponents at 2PM on Saturday. There’s no better way to cool off on a hot day than with spray from a frenzy of water gun-carrying kids.

  7. Go to the park! Looking for something more small scale than a festival or a water fight? Have your parents take you to your local park. Bring a picnic lunch along, or grill something on the park’s outdoor pit. We definitely advise getting there early and claiming the perfect shady spot.

Whatever you do, have FUN this Labor Day weekend!
